At the CES, Canonical introduced one of their new focuses, "Ubuntu TV". Yup, the "Linux for humans" maker is going up against both Apple and Google with a more open source product of their own!

It actually makes sense, moving it from the "desktop" (includes laptops) which is still dominated by Windows and is considered a dying platform and adding a consumer electronic device where people won't care if it is running Linux or not, so long as it works (and looks cool). And don't think they are stopping development for phones and tablets with the Unity interface!

You can test it out now, built on Ubuntu 12.04, though it is very much in testing phase. One caveat is that for some reason it has to uninstall Unity 2D, but chances are if you have full-blown Unity then you don't need Unity 2D.

Now? Isn't 12.04 not due out for another 16 weeks?

It's in development, and it is that development version (beta? alpha?) that Ubuntu TV is built on top of.
