I remember reading back in 2008, when the economy was tanking, that instead of providing a holiday party for its employees they donated to a local charity on behalf of its employees. This was at a time when everybody was just getting into the "shock and awe" of the economy, and feeling the impact. The important thing is they are doing this while at the same time enjoying some of the best quarters in sales! While other tech companies were having problems and layoffs, Red Hat was beating expectations and continues to do so! They could have easily said they were "storing up for tough times" or "shoring up against the falling economy" but they didn't! From what I've ready, Red Hat's community and openness is more than just their software licensing model, it is part of their overall thinking which is a breath of fresh air when headlines talk about corruption, misappropriation and other corporate sleaze.
