I have an older laptop and I think the screen is going on it.

When it is turned on, after a few minutes the screen dims to lower than you can set it manually using the function keys. When I say "dimming" I mean it is nearly all-black, but you can sort-of see what is on the screen. Sort of a black-on-black or grey-on-black style. It is not clear enough to use by any means.

It occurs at random times, even if you are in the middle of doing something. So I don't think it is a power setting issue.

    The external monitor works fine.

Does this sound like a bad connector, frying video card or dying screen part? It does work with the external monitor so I am wondering if it is destined to be a "portable" desktop?

Sounds like the display backlight is failing.

That's not replaceable without replacing the whole screen, is it?

It's possible, I'm not sure sure I'd want to try it though.
