Whether you need to reinstall Windows 7 or want to refresh your Windows 8 without the vendor's baked-in bloatware, there are sources for downloading the .ISO files which can be later burned on a CD/DVD or places on a USB. Don't get me wrong, these are not pirated versions and not a questionable bit-torrent sources. You will need to supply your own product key, but it will install a plain-vanilla version without the add-ons that vendors slip in and possibly without all of the drivers included.

    OS: Windows 7
    Source: Digital River
While this isn't an officially supported way to get Windows 7 installation media, Digital River is an officially licensed distributor of Microsoft Software and if Microsoft didn't want users using this they would have disabled access to it a long time ago.
Registration: You can use Windows 7 for 30 days before you have to enter a genuine product key.

    OS: Windows 8 & 8.1
    Source: Microsoft
Keep in mind that this method does not allow you to download Windows 8.1 and install it on a system that is running Windows 8.
    1. Navigate to the Upgrade Windows with only a product key (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only)page on Microsot's website
    2. Click to install the Windows version you have (8 or 8.1)
    3. Run the "WindowsSetupBox.exe" file
    4. Enter your Product Key. The program will determine from your product key the type of Windows 8(.1) to install (Professional, Enterprise, etc.) as well as 32 or 64 bit.
    5. Select the install media; USB flash drive or ISO file

The handy thing is these files can be downloaded and saved "just in case" as well, so you are ready for that ultimate and final crash. Or it could be beneficial for moving to another hard drive, like an SSD, and you want a clean start.
