Canonical has been working on a business-orientated Ubuntu and is making available this spin based on the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS release.

It's a great idea as they remove things like social networking and non-business related applications. Then they include common business applications like VMware View and Visio importer for LibreOffice Draw.

Quote:The remix retains all the goodness of an Ubuntu Long-Term Support (LTS) release and is compatible with all Ubuntu certified hardware, apps and tools, adding business-focused tools from the standard Ubuntu and partner archives and removing home-user oriented apps. There are no modified or enhanced packages in the remix and it gets its security updates from the same place as standard Ubuntu; it’s just a convenient starting point that includes many common changes made by IT administrators deploying Ubuntu in a corporate setting.

This first LTS-based release includes the Adobe Flash Plugin, VMware View, and the OpenJDK 6 Java run-time environment, while removing social networking software, file sharing apps, games and development/sysadmin tools. We now include full language support and both 32 and 64-bit builds, just the same as Ubuntu.

The result is a simple base image that can be deployed into your corporate environment or used as a starting point for further customisation. Users also benefit from great new features like built-in Microsoft Windows RDP 7.1 support and the Microsoft Visio diagram importer in LibreOffice Draw.

You can fill out the form and download this spin from http://www.ubuntu.com/business/desktop/remix.
In somewhat related news, Dell will be selling laptops with Ubuntu installed but focused for a (web/cloud) developer purpose.
KDE applications Overhead

KDE really has a few good applications that somebody may want to use even though they are not using KDE. It has been thought that to run a KDE-based application one would have to pull in tons of Qt and KDE libraries. Except nobody has really done a study on how MUCH one has to pull in. Until now.

Quote:In one paragraph he says that "since it is a KDE program it will work best in that environment." and offhandedly states that "In Gnome it will drag in a couple of hundred MB as KDE dependencies". I found that unlikely, given all the work that we in KO GmbH have done on Calligra for embedded platforms but I know that there is some overhead involved. But how much is it?

Michael Pyne took up the challenge to check it out and it is interesting what the results are.

Ultimately he found by running konquerer + konversation + associated daemons
Quote:When a KDE application is started in a non-KDE environment the memory goes up (of course) and when it is killed again the memory goes down. The memory that remains used is probably the KDE overhead in the form of libraries (Qt and the kdelibs) and daemons (kdeinit4 and kded4). This overhead is 48 MB.

Consider that something like LibreOffice has its own toolkit it runs which is not dependent on any particular desktop environment while the Qt and kdelibs will be re-used by other KDE/Qt based applications and it all does not sound nearly so bad.

So if you are thinking about a KDE/Qt program running in Gnome (or Fluxbox or other environments/windows), don't worry... it isn't as bad as you may think.

I am growing unhappy with my web host provider and am looking at alternatives to use. I am not as familiar with the registration process. I am alright with the programming, but not so much with the administration.

The $3.75/month price has been enticing but with issues showing up, it is growing to be not enough.

It is not a highly-active website and doesn't have anything fancy on it as of yet but I would like to have programming capabilities. I would like to use the same host for possible more complicated self-programmed web sites but that is not 100% mandatory.

I can deal with PHP & MySQL or Postgre or ASP.NET & SQL Server. The current site uses a little PHP but nothing that cannot be easily worked around. I just need to have easy access to upload pages.

I am even contemplating using Amazon's Web Services so if anybody has experience using them I would love to hear from you.

Who do you suggest, and what experience do you have with them?

Users of Windows SkyDrive take note:

Windows SkyDrive has just been updated. As part of this update, your SkyDrive has been reduced from 25 GB to 7 GB (unless you have >7 GB of files already uploaded).

For now, and until who knows when, users of SkyDrive who have had their account before April 22, 2012 will have the option to upgrade their SkyDrive (back) to 25GB for free, but you have to do something to get it.

Navigate to your SkyDrive in any browser.

You should see a banner above your file listing with a link to your free upgrade. If not, look for "Manage Storage" menu item on the left-hand side menues.

You be put in the Manage storage page and under SkyDrive Free you should see a button "Free upgrade!"

Click it.

On the plus side, there are now 3 tiers or extra space (+20/+50/+100GB) you can purchase for actually a very reasonable rate ($10/$25/$50 per year). Note those prices are per year, most other services charge per month.

There is also a new SkyDrive application they are offering. If you have used anything like Dropbox, SpiderOak or Live Mesh this operates very similarly.

The application will synchronize the contents of your <username>/SkyDrive folder with the SkyDrive cloud drive.

One advantage of this, though, is that these files are now as accessible as all the other files in SkyDrive to add/delete, move and edit. Previously Live Mesh put the synchronized files in a location where you could not do much with it, and was separate from the files you upload or edit in a browser. No longer, they are one and the same.

Supported systems include Windows Vista, 7 & 8, Mac OS X (Lion), iPhone/iPad and Windows 7 Phone.

Quote:I needed a couple of AA batteries and found the display at the supermarket where they were all arrayed. Normally when I’m shopping in the supermarket, I tend to look at the price/kg or price/l when comparing similar products. In the case of the batteries, there was no such indicator. Fine, I thought, I’ll work it out myself. I grabbed a few different makes and scanned the packaging for some measure of their capacity. Nothing. Not a single one of the batteries had any indicator of how much energy they would provide. Instead, they all had terms like ‘PLUS’, ‘SUPER’, ‘ULTRA’ and of course had wildly differing prices. So, I decided that it was time for an experiment and bought one pack of every type I could find.

Nick Shaforostoff puts in his blog post a number of steps one can do to speed up Kubuntu. Some of these changes could possibly benefit other distributions running KDE.

Quote: run kubuntu on a 1gb ram netbook, and optimizing KDE memory usage is cruicial for me because i use this machine for development (kdevelop is a large beast, and i want to have chromium and gcc running as well). I'd like to share a few tips to achieve that.

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-low-fat-settings

if you don't need bluetooth: sudo apt-get purge bluez* bluedevil

sudo apt-get purge akonadi-backend-mysql mysql* (this will automatically install sqlite backend)

if you don't use activities: sudo rm /usr/share/kde4/services/kactivitymanagerd.desktop (i filled bug 298088 with request to make kactivitymanagerd ran only when really needed)

if you don't need akonadi: sudo rm /usr/share/autostart/akonaditray.desktop

if you don't use nepomuk (i.e. disabled it in systemsettings): sudo rm /usr/share/autostart/nepomukserver.desktop

sudo rm /usr/share/autostart/kaddressbookmigrator.desktop

if you don't use printer often: sudo rm /usr/share/autostart/printer-applet.desktop (you can still start this applet manually by issuing 'printer-applet' command in konsole)

sudo mv /etc/rc5.d/S50saned /etc/rc5.d/K50saned

(hint by Dave: instead of removing .desktop files, just do 'cp FILE ~/.kde/share/autostart && echo Hidden=true >> ~/.kde/share/autostart/FILE)

Currently my Kubuntu uses 222mb right after startup.

I haven't had a chance to pop in a LiveCD and see if I can still access the contents or not. It's just frustrating.
On the other hand, it is giving me the temptation to install the Windows 8 Consumer Preview on another hard drive for the heck of it. I just need the image (otherwise its going to take me 15 hours to download it... no exaggeration) so long as I don't need to have Windows 7 already installed.

I'm not saying its true, or it isn't but I thought this would be a good news piece to pass along and I remember hearing about the Java exploit that has been in the wild for a while now that covers all 3 major systems (Windows, OS X and Linux).
Half a million Mac computers 'infected with malware'
Quote:A investigation by Dr Web suggests that about 600,000 Macs have installed the malware - potentially allowing them to be hijacked and used as a "botnet".

It says that more than half that number are based in the US.

Apple has released a security update, but users who have not installed the patch remain exposed.

Flashback was first detected last September when anti-virus researchers flagged up software masquerading itself as a Flash Player update. Once downloaded it deactivated some of the computer's security software.
Later versions of the malware exploited weaknesses in the Java programming language to allow the code to be installed from bogus sites without the user's permission.

Apple has since patched Java, but this was only yesterday. As of today, more than 600,000 Macs are currently infected with the Flashback Trojan, which steals your user names and passwords to popular websites by monitoring your network traffic.
Russian antivirus company Dr. Web first reported today that 550,000 Macs were being controlled by the growing Mac botnet.
My wife and I have come to the conclusion that her monitor is off somewhat. It is no surprise or secret that delivered screen's colors are off. Thankfully there are devices you use to help correct the color.
My wife is an artist and uses the laptop to display references for her paintings. Unfortunately the colors are a bit off and I know hand-tweaking is a task of patience and luck at its best. This may also explain some discrepancy between the screen and the printer too.

Does anybody have one which I could use? I don't think it is something you need to keep using, or am I wrong?

Otherwise, is there one you recommend?
It is a Windows 7 Home Dell Latitude (17") running on an i5 chip.
